In Australia a company called ecolibria now help to shield homes and workplaces from electromagnetic radiation exposure from nearby phone towers and other radio frequency transmitters. The proliferation of mobile phone base stations in all cities and towns around the world has been an area of great concern as people are exposed to levels of electromagnetic radiation ( emr ) that have never before been experienced. As more and more people are diagnosed as electrically sensitive are we potentially paying a very large price for convenient wireless technology? EMR shielding materials that have been used primarily in the defense force overseas are now being used quite readily to protect individuals in their homes and workplaces. In fact in Sweden over 200 000 buildings have had such shielding applied and now buildings in Australia are being protected too. Shielding paint for wall surfaces are being applied on the exterior or interior of the building. The surfaces become very electric as they absorb and deflect the electromagnetic energy emitted from the phone mast and are therfore grounded. It may seem starnge to ground or earth paint but this is necessary and gives you a good idea of how much electricity is being shielded from enetering the home or workplace. Windows are a weak point and are protected by means of fabric or film. Fabric can be formed into blinds or used as lining on the back of existing curtains to shield glazing. Alternatively a tinting type film can be applied to the glazing to shield against the emr. Shielding against electromagnetic energy from wireless transmission devices like radar , mobile phone base stations , phone towers , phone masts and radio transmission is all about getting as much metal and distance between you and the source of the emf as possible. The paint , fabric and film simply contain metal ( no toxic heavy metals like lead ) in such a way that shielding against the emr is maximised. It has been found in many cases that alluminium and stainless steel fly screens have had a shielding effect. They are not as effecient as the shielding materials by any means but the more metal there is in the fly screen and the smaller the holes the better the shielding capacity has been found to be. It is important to note that electromagnetic radiation readings must be taken by a proffessional before shielding is considred. This is because it is very difficult to determine which areas of the building need to be shielded ( roof , floor , walls ) and how much shielding is required. For example the higher the readings the more coats of paint that may be required and vice versa. Earthing the paint correctly is also critical as it may be possible to introduce a larger electrical exposure problem than before if this is not done correctly. Readings should be taken during and after the shielding application to ensure that no area has been compromised. The easiest way to think of electromagnetic radiation from wireless transmitters is like sunlight. It will bounce and deflect off surfaces and if there is a small gap or crack in a shielded surface it will come shining through. Certain trees ( the denser the better ) also have an affect on shielding against the electromagneic radiation. A matal roof for example can help deflect much of the emr away from the building. Radiation is not a word that governemnts like to use and that is why energy is often used instead. When reading about electromagnetic radiation from mobile phone towers and electromagnetic energy for all intensive purposes you will be reading about the same thing. This has often created some confusion. |
